Quick Fix: How to Reset and Unstick Your Garbage Disposal
Garbage disposal not working? Don’t panic—most disposal problems can be fixed in just a few minutes with no tools (or plumber) required. Whether it’s humming, jammed, or completely unresponsive, here’s a simple guide to get it up and running again.
✅ Step 1: Always Start with Safety
Before doing anything, turn off the power to the disposal. Either unplug it from under the sink or switch off the breaker. Never reach inside the disposal while it’s powered.
🔄 Step 2: Hit the Reset Button
If your disposal won’t turn on or makes no sound, it may have tripped its internal safety switch.
Here’s what to do:
- Look under the unit for a small red button.
- Press it. If it was tripped, you’ll feel it click back into place.
- Restore power and test the disposal.

🔧 Step 3: Free a Jammed Disposal
If you hear a hum but no grinding, it’s likely jammed. Here’s how to fix it:
- Turn off the power again.
- Look at the bottom of the disposal for a small hex (Allen) wrench hole.
- Insert the wrench and turn it back and forth to manually free the blades.
- No wrench? Use a wooden spoon from the top to nudge the impellers.
Once it turns freely, you’ve cleared the jam.

With the power off, use tongs or pliers to remove any foreign objects—like bones, utensils, or food scraps—from the drain. Never use your hand!

- Turn the power back on.
- Run cold water.
- Turn on the disposal—it should work smoothly now!

- Don’t pour grease or put fibrous or starchy foods (like celery, onion skins, or potato peels) down the drain.
- Run cold water before and after using the disposal.
- Freshen it up with ice cubes and lemon slices occasionally.
